How Can You Become an HVAC Technician?

  1. Start With a High School Diploma or GED – Most HVAC educational programs require a high school diploma or equivalent certificate as a prerequisite for admission. Even if your high school education is still a work in progress, there are still things you can do to move forward along your career path. If you’re interested in entering the HVAC field after high school, focus on math, computer science, and if available, shop classes to start building the skills you need. Additionally, consider looking into any vocational programs your high school may offer.
  2. Get Certified – Once you’ve earned your diploma or GED, it’s time to enroll in an HVAC certification program. These programs typically take around nine months to complete and involve hands-on instruction in a controlled classroom environment. Not all states require this kind of training for HVAC technicians, but it will give you valuable experience and skills, and it looks great on your resume.
  3. Find an Apprenticeship – Once you’ve built the foundation of your HVAC career in the classroom, it’s time to move into the field. Find a local HVAC company that offers apprenticeships for on-the-job training and real-world experience. This can be the most important stage of your career. With the right team, you’ll find a place where you can continue to grow and advance for the rest of your career!
  4. Consider Additional Certifications – Once you’ve mastered standard HVAC services, then it’s time to think about specializing or branching out. Do you want to be NATE certified? Or maybe you want to work with air ducts? There’s always something new to learn in our industry, and gaining additional certifications will make you a valuable asset to any team.

Build a Career that Will Last a Lifetime

Like many trades, the HVAC industry is a stable one, and there are always opportunities for technicians to further their careers. As an HVAC company, we want our apprentices to get all of the education and experience they need to grow into their roles as HVAC technicians and give our more established techs the support they need to make the most of their careers. When you partner with a team like ours, we’ll help you build a lifelong career you can be proud of.
